Construction Craft FAQS

What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a relationship between an employer and an employee during which the worker (the apprentice) learns a craft.  You “earn while you learn” through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction.

What does apprenticeship training involve?

Related classroom instruction – Takes place in the classroom.  The teaching covers techniques of the craft and also the theory behind the techniques.  Classes are held during the day or evening and meet for a minimum of 144 hours per year.

On-the-job training (OJT) – apprentices work and learn under experienced people known as Journeypersons.  Under their guidance, the apprentices learn every aspect of their craft over time. Depending on the craft, apprenticeships usually last two to five years.

Why apprenticeship?

  • Craft requirements such as tools, equipment, or special clothing.

  • The market for jobs in your geographical area.

College Credits?

Once you complete your training, you may apply your Certificate of Completion for credits towards a Skilled Trades Degree at participating colleges and universities.

This is done on an individual basis with colleges/universities giving credit for the technical part of your training towards this degree.

What if an employer does not sponsor me but I am interested in learning a craft?

You may still attend classes as a Trainee.  Accurate records are kept of attendance, grades and on-the-job training hours for future registration of apprentices.
